Greetings! My name is Alison Brown and I will be journeying to Africa to share the gift of teaching with the people there. I want to tell you a little bit about myself and what has led up to this trip for me. I was born in Augusta, GA, but graduated high school in Daytona Beach, FL. I then studied Business at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. After two years there I transferred to Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL to focus my studies on Entrepreneurship. I graduated in 2002 with Bachelors degrees in Marketing as well as Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (ESBM). After earning my business degrees I chose to volunteer for Teach For America in Atlanta, Georgia from 2002-2004. Once I began my work teaching in a Title I school in 2002, I realized my love for the profession. Following my teaching for Atlanta Public Schools I moved to the DeKalb County School System to another Title I school where I taught from 2004 to 2008. While at Knollwood Elementary in DeKalb County, I wrote and received a grant for a four year Drama Residency of which five teachers would benefit, modeled health/wellness lessons that were broadcast nationwide on CBS’s Early Show, and obtained my Masters degree in Urban Teacher Leadership. As the only white homeroom teacher in a 99% African American school I became very interested in my students’ heritage. While working toward my Urban Teacher Leadership masters degree from Georgia State University I had the chance to study African Psychology under Dr. Asa Hilliard III. He spoke about his travels around the continent of Africa. He would host trips to Kemet and I had hoped to one-day travel with him. Unfortunately Dr. Hilliard passed last August, but I think he would be proud to know my plans to teach in Ghana through the IFESH program to learn more about others and myself. I invite you to view my video interview about my trip by clicking on the link on The School Box homepage (www.schoolbox.com) under Alison’s Adventure!
